Why he was wise:Played by a long line of formidable actors including Alan Napier, Michael Gough and now Michael Caine (pictured right, with Christian Bale), the venerable butler never lets loyalty to his watchful master get in the way of common sense comes. Caine's Alfred is quick with a quip, a gentle touch when needed, and always, always right (even if Bruce doesn't immediately grasp the truth).

Why he was wise:Yoda, who is the wisest of the wise. Learn from him, you can. And not just about how to achieve victory, but also how to gracefully accept defeat. When the Jedi Order, which Yoda had led as Grand Master for centuries, was largely wiped out under his command, he went into exile. But he did not give up, nor did he lose hope. It is doubtful that Luke Skywalker could have recovered from his own defeat at the hands of Darth Vader had he not followed Yoda's example. Also, let's face it, when you hit 900 it looks so good it really isn't.

Why he was wise:The Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry can seem serious at times, but he always encourages Harry's curiosity even when it might get him into trouble. It is no coincidence that Dumbledore is the only wizard Voldemort has ever feared. Whether it was disguising an invisibility cloak from Harry's father or coming up with an ingenious way to get the Resurrection Stone for Harry, this ancient statesman of magic was always an ally, no matter what Rita Skeeter said. Even after death, Dumbledore's leaders and his army survived.

Why he was wise:It has been a legend throughout history, and rightly so. Although Arthur's adoptive father assumed his older brother Kay was the strongest son and the best chance in the family to win a king's tournament, Merlin recognized Arthur's potential from the moment they met. Although the king who would lead England from the Middle Ages was then just a skinny blond boy, Merlin saw in him the power to save his people. Why he was wise:Akira Kurosawa's 1954 masterpiece features heroic deeds galore. But as the quiet and resourceful leader of the titular septet sworn to protect a farming village from bandit attacks, Kambei can set the best example. When a boy is taken hostage, Kambei shaves off his topknot, a shocking and even embarrassing act for a 16th-century samurai warrior, so he can pose as a non-threatening priest and surprise the kidnapper. George Lucas was so moved by his selfless service that Kambei partially inspired his creation of Yoda. Why he was wise:Now, one could argue that the messianic cybernetic warrior Neo didn't learn much from Morpheus, the hovercraft captain.Nebuchadnezzar, about fighting the machines that killed most of humanity. Most of his fighting skills were acquired through a direct download: "I Know Kung Fu!". But what Morpheus lacked in instruction he made up for in faith: that his charge was the one who would save them all, no matter how much. Neo doubted himself. And if that's not "wow" worthy, what is?
